NEMA 14-50 Outlet Installation in Tustin, CA
A dedicated 240-volt receptacle in your garage or carport for a plug-in mobile connector, wired and permitted to code.
A Plug Instead of a Fixed Charger
A NEMA 14-50 is the same receptacle an electric range uses, and nearly every EV ships with or offers a mobile connector that plugs straight into it. The appeal is flexibility: no equipment mounted to your wall, a charger you can throw in the trunk, and freedom to change charging hardware later without calling an electrician. The tradeoff is a lower practical ceiling, since a 14-50 is limited to a 40-amp continuous draw, and receptacles are a wear point that hardwired connections are not.
What the Job Includes
A dedicated 50-amp circuit.
Not shared with the dryer, not tapped off an existing range circuit. Its own breaker and its own conductors.
An industrial-grade receptacle.
Consumer-grade 14-50 receptacles are built for a range that gets plugged in once a decade, not for a connector drawing 32 amps nightly. We install a receptacle rated for that duty.
Correct box, cover, and mounting height.
Weather-rated where the location requires it, at a height that keeps the connector cord off the floor.
Permit, inspection, and load verification.
Filed with the City of Tustin and tested under load.

Carports and Detached Garages
Several older Tustin properties have carports or detached garages, which turns a simple receptacle job into a feeder run, sometimes trenched. That is entirely doable and we do it regularly, but it changes the quote materially, so we measure it at the estimate rather than guessing.
Questions About This Service
Somewhat. A 14-50 supports a 32-amp continuous draw with most mobile connectors, against 40 or 48 amps for a hardwired unit. Overnight, most drivers never notice the difference.
Many wall chargers offer a plug-in version. Ask us before you buy, because plug-in units are capped at 40 amps by code regardless of the charger's rating.
It is usually a different configuration, it is not rated for continuous duty, and sharing it means you cannot run both. It also will not pass inspection as a charging circuit.
Current code requires GFCI protection for 240-volt receptacles in these locations. We install accordingly, which is one reason a permitted install differs from a handyman install.
